Installation procedures - Freestanding braais

  1. Position the fireplace and determine where the flue will pass through the ceiling and ensure that no beams etc are in the way.

  2. If the Fireplace cannot be moved to avoid an obstacle, make use of a “bend” (offset pipe)

  3. Cut hole in ceiling plumb with centre point on the fireplace chimney outlet. (allow 20mm play) (1)

  4. Remove roof tiles above this opening or cut fairly tight fit hole in steel roofs for flue pipes t pass (2)

  5. Assemble flue pipe sections, securing collars at joints with screws or rivets and seal with silicone (3) Push assembled flue stack through the ceiling and roof and lower onto fireplace. Secure extra long stacks to fireplace chimney outlet to stablise (4)

  6. Secure fireplace with brackets to floor or wall where necessary (5)

  7. Wrap fiberglass insulation around flue in ceiling area and secure with wire(6) Secure stack to roof structure with wire.

  8. Fix escutcheon plate (7) to ceiling with silicone or screws.

  9. Shape tiles with grinder for a tight fit and replace around stack (2)

  10. Apply high heat silicone sealer liberally into gap between roof and stack (2)

  11. Apply roofseal ( cloth and paint product) over silicone after it has set. (8) (Lead fl;ashing can be used as an alternative) NB: Before using the fireplace the roofseal must be left to cure for 2 rain free days after installation.

  12. Fit cowl and cowl base to flue stack and fix properly .Ensure that the cowl turns freely (9)

  13. Exposed components ( flue pipe and cowl ) must be painted with enamel or rust resistant paint after installation. Repaint 1 to 2 times a year in coastal areas. (10)

  14. Interior components can be maintained with heat resistant matt black etchcote paint (11)

  15. Fireplace, may not stand on any flammable surface. A tiled concrete floor or brick hearth with ceramic tiles is safe. (12) Footpiece can be filled with ceramic wool to prevent heat transfer to the hearth.

  16. Ensure that the flue pipe is at least 100mm away from wooden structures.

  17. For pine ceilings, make gap around flue pipe larger and flare insulation material through gap and between escutcheon plate and around ceiling boards.
